Symptom: Excel freezes, hangs, or closes unexpectedly when clicking Save or Save As.
Why Does Excel Crash on Save?
Crashes during saving usually indicate file corruption, conflicts with antivirus software, or rogue add-ins interfering with the disk write process.
Solution 1: Open in Safe Mode
Hold the CTRL key while launching Excel. If you can save the file in Safe Mode, an Add-in is likely the culprit.
Solution 2: Check COM Add-ins
Go to File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, select "COM Add-ins" and click Go. Uncheck everything and try to save. Re-enable one by one to find the offender.
Solution 3: Save as a Different File Type
Try saving as .xlsb (Binary) or .html. Sometimes the conversion process strips out the corrupted XML data causing the crash.
Solution 4: Clear Conditional Formatting
Excessive conditional formatting rules can choke the save process. Use the "Clean Rules" feature to remove duplicates.
